Extra Assignment

One question I would have regarding this assignment would be; are we supposed to be making a thesis point and have a bigger meaning to this research project or do we just research the person and then report exactly what we find? I don't think it would be exactly possible to come up with a theory on this person's writing styles without doing the research before. If it is just a research and reporting back should there still be a overall feeling from the project?

You raise a good point here. You are eventually going to make an argument in your ethnographic report; your argument will be about this person's writing practice, rather than developing a "theory" about writing in general. Note, for example, the conclusion that Selzer draws in his articles -- he makes assertions about the engineer's writing practices and then speculates about what it might mean for technical writing more generally.

That being said, what I want to emphasize now is that your argument should be based on data you collect through the semester. You collect data through gathering and analyzing, collect data through observations, and collect data through interviews, and only then do you need to begin formulating your argument as you analyze this evidence.
